Do the Ozempic Side Effects Go Away After Stopping?
Dr. Jill Barat, PharmDSide effects are relatively common when using medications like Ozempic. These side effects tend to include mostly gastrointestinal issues like nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, constipation, and diarrhea. For some people, these side effects may be severe enough that they want to stop the medication entirely.
So, if you end up stopping Ozempic, will all the side effects go away? How long until the medication is cleared from your body?
Below, we will answer these questions as well as outline what it may feel like after you stop taking Ozempic.
Will the Ozempic side effects go away after I stop the medication?
The common gastrointestinal (GI) side effects from Ozempic should slowly fade away after you stop the medication.
In time, your digestion should feel back to how it was before you started the medication.
How long until the Ozempic side effects go away?
The half-life of Ozempic is about 1 week. Meaning that if your dose is 2mg, you should still have about 1mg of Ozempic left in your body after a week, and 0.5mg left after two weeks, etc.
After about 5 weeks, the remaining medication in your body should be low enough to consider it basically cleared.
At this time, or in the following weeks, the GI side effects that you were having from Ozempic use, should be clearing up or no longer noticeable.
What does it feel like when you stop taking Ozempic?
When you stop taking Ozempic, the side effects you were dealing with should like slowly dissapate over time. This is likely a good thing.
However, you may also start noticing the positive effects of the medication wearing off. This could mean that you are feeling hungry more quickly, experiencing food cravings again, or feeling like you need to eat a larger quantity of food to feel full. This could lead to you regaining some or all of the weight that you had initially lost through this treatment.
