Zepbound Injection Sites: The 3 Recommended Areas

Zepbound Injection Sites: The 3 Recommended Areas

Zepbound is a popular weight loss drug that contains the active ingredient Tirzepatide. For some people, Zepbound may help them lose excess weight and help them improve their overall health or decrease the risks or progression of weight-related diseases.

This promising medication is also an injectable medication. And, for some users, this might be their first time using an injectable medication at all. This might seem a little intimidating.

To help you feel more confident about using injectable Zepbound, we will cover the 3 recommended injection sites, as well as a few tips for injecting correctly and safely.

What are the 3 Zepbound injection sites?

According to the package insert and manufacturer information, there are 3 main injection sites for Zepbound.

In general, these are all fleshy areas where you can inject under the skin, but not into muscle or veins. If you see any visible veins, you will want to avoid those.

1. The stomach (abdomen)

The stomach/abdominal area is a popular site for Zepbound injections. This is because it is quite easy to do yourself. If the area is hard to inject because of the softness, sometimes standing up can help.

One thing to keep in mind when injecting into your abdomen is to avoid your bellybutton area by about 2 inches. The navel contains lots of vessels and nerves that should not be injected into.

2. The upper thighs

The upper thighs are a second possible site for your Zepbound injections. This is the area above the knee, on the front side of your leg. This is a good option is you have fleshy thighs. But, if you have a lot of visible muscle here and not so much fatty tissue, this may not be your best option.

3. The back upper arm

The backs of your upper arms are the third possible injection sites for Zepbound. Many people will pinch the fatty tissue on the back of the arm to make the injection. However, for this location, it may be a bit hard to get the angles right and inject yourself. For back upper arm injections, you might want to ask a roommate or family member to help you out with the injection.

Can you inject Zepbound yourself?

Yes, for most injection sites, you can safely and easily inject the medication yourself. But, the one site that may be an exception is the back upper arms.

While the back upper arms are a great place for the injection, due to how you’ll need to hold the needle to go straight in, it may not be possible to do on your own.

If you want to go for this back upper arm injection site, ask a friend or family member for help with the injection.

For the other sites, you might also prefer for someone else to do it, just out of preference. This is ok too. Just make sure they read all of the injection instructions and know how to safely and accurately give an injection. This may help people overcome the psychological roadblock to injecting themselves.

Rotate injection sites or specific areas each week

As with most regularly injected medications, you will want to rotate your Zepbound injection site each week. For some people, this might mean that they rotate through the left thigh, right thigh, abdomen, left upper arm, right upper arm, etc.

But, if you have only one injection site that you like (like the abdomen) it is ok to still use the same general location. Just be sure to move away from the actual previous puncture sites for a few weeks. This might look like: Abdomen 3 inches left of navel, then abdomen 3 inches right of navel, then abdomen 3 inches below navel, etc.

Rotating your injection sites is important to give the previous injection sites time to heal and help the areas from becoming too sore from repeat close injections.
