Quercetin and Zinc Benefits: Immune System Strengthening

The COVID-19 pandemic has taught the world one thing - viruses are not to be taken lightly. With the pandemic in full force, concerns for our health and safety have been rampant.

But beyond the face masks and frequent sanitation, are there other ways to prevent ourselves from the flu and viruses?

Many people have looked towards natural supplements and ingredients that boost our immunity. That’s why quercetin and zinc took the spotlight during this pandemic.

Quercetin and zinc have been well-documented in many research studies for its ability to strengthen our immune system and help our bodies fight against viruses.

Even the Eastern Virginia School of Medicine (EVMS) included these two nutrients into their covid-19 management protocol.

Before you run to the nearest drug store, here’s everything you need to know about quercetin and zinc benefits.

What are Quercetin and Zinc?

Quercetin

Let’s start off with quercetin.

Quercetin is known as a flavonoid - a plant pigment. From apples and raspberries to lettuce and nuts, you can find quercetin in many foods.

Many flavonoids are considered to have antioxidant/antiviral properties. Antioxidants help fight against free radicals in our body, which are molecules that can damage our cells and weaken our health.

One study performed on mice showed that quercetin stopped a fatal infection within mice that carried a virus. Additionally, researchers also found that quercetin along with other vitamins, lowered the chances of people developing upper respiratory tract infections.

Zinc

On the other hand, zinc is a nutrient. It also assists with immune responses by fighting off bacteria and viruses that may enter the body. You can consume zinc through red meats, grains, and seafood. Or you can also try a premium all inclusive supplement that combines with zinc and quercetin as well.

There’s a ton of research that supports zinc’s ability to strengthen the immune system. In one study done, researchers found that when people with a regular cold consumed zinc syrup, they recovered much more quickly.

How do Quercetin and Zinc strengthen the immune system?

Sometimes it’s not enough to know what happens, it’s important to know how it happens as well.

Given how quercetin and zinc work on a cellular level to strengthen the immune system, researchers wonder if they can help prevent or alleviate symptoms of COVID-19.

While much more research needs to be done, the existing studies show something promising. To understand its significance, here’s how quercetin and zinc help our bodies fight off viruses.

Quercetin immunity benefits:

May prevent a virus from entering the cell

For a virus to infect us, it must enter our cells and replicate - without entry to the cell, the virus can’t do its job. In one study, researchers tested what would happen if a cell were injected with both quercetin and a strain of the H1N1 virus. Researchers noticed that the structure of the cell never changed. Generally when viruses enter, it should alter the shape of the cell. Researchers assumed that quercetin somehow blocked the segment of the virus from inserting itself into the cell.

May stop a virus from assembling

Studies have shown that quercetin was able to block the formation of viral DNA within a cell. It inhibited parts of the viral DNA to bind together.

Zinc immunity benefits:

Supports development of bacteria fighting cells

Zinc aids many bacteria fighting cells within our body develop and mature so that it functions properly. For example, T-Cells are a type of white blood cell that detects and destroys invading viruses. Researchers noticed that with zinc deficiency these white blood cells did not fight off viruses properly.

Supports signaling in the cells

Researchers noticed that lower zinc levels within the body disrupted signaling involved in the development of white blood cells. Signaling allows cells to communicate with one another and streamline many important cellular processes. As such with this disruption, white blood cells never fully mature. With less white blood cells this means that the body has a difficult time in fighting off viruses and bacteria.

With all of this information, it’s pretty obvious why researchers are keen on the use of quercetin and zinc in the fight against COVID - 19 and other viruses. While plenty more research and development are needed to fully understand its effectiveness, the science seems like a great start.
