Over 37 million children will experience back pain by age 18.

Nonspecific back pain in children is increasingly prevalent. It increases with age and is more common in girls than in boys. Back pain in children is different from back pain in adults. Back pain in children, especially those under 4 years of age, is most likely due to a serious underlying disorder. This article will go into some of the various causes of back pain in children as well as some treatment options for it.

Causes of back pain that occur in older children
Disc injuries can happen to children who do gymnastics, skateboard, skate, or do some other activity where they land very hard on their feet or butts frequently. The force of the fall is transmitted into their vertebrae which can cause damage.
Spondylolysis presents frequently in people who hyperextend their backs such as gymnasts.
Spondylolisthesis can occur in various sports such as football and gymnastics. It is a spinal disorder where the vertebra slips forward into the bone under it. If it slips too far, it can press on nerves and cause severe back pain.

Causes of back pain that occur in younger or older children
Spinal infections in children are a constant concern for physicians. Spinal infections require a prompt diagnosis and treatment or they can progress quickly.
Spinal tumors are also a major concern in children. Although very rare, spinal tumors must be diagnosed as early as possible to begin treatment.
Overuse can put stress on the back. Overuse can occur when carrying heavy backpacks or when sitting or standing with poor posture.
Scheuermann’s disease happens when the vertebrae grow unevenly and causes the back to take on a wedge or round shape. It causes pain that is usually not severe enough to limit activity; however, not correcting it within 6 to 9 months can cause the curvature to become permanent.
Treatment options for back pain
There are plenty of stretches and exercises your child can do to get relief from back pain although some patients may not be able to. Yoga provides a few exercises such as the two-knee twist, the sphinx, the pigeon, and legs up the wall. These are other stretches they can do such as the knee to chest stretch and the cobra stretch. If they are able to incorporate some of these stretches/poses, it may diminish or eliminate your child’s back pain. Be careful not to harm their back further by having them do too much. If they simply are in too much pain or do not want to risk further injury, there are other options available.

There are nutritional supplements that may help. Glucosamine, chondroitin, MSM, and collagen are well-known joint/bone supplements but there are also some you may not know, such as white willow bark, curcumin, bromelain, devil’s claw, and boswellia.
