A simple Google search of the title of this article “Is Texting Creating Back Problems” will yield over 5.3 million results. Considering over 250 million Americans have or will have back pain and the fact that cell phone use has become more prevalent over the past decade, it is no wonder why so many articles are related to this topic. Back pain is the second leading cause of all doctor visits and one of the top reasons for missed work. One-half of working Americans admit to having back pain each year.

Thinking about how why back pain is so common, we should start from the top, literally. The average adult human head weighs between 10 and 12 pounds. In a person looking down at a 45 degree angle to look at their phone, the weight of their head increases to roughly 49 pounds due to the force of gravity. If that person looks down at a 60 degree angle, their head increases to a staggering 60 pounds. Adding that much pressure to the cervical spine, the spine above one’s shoulders, can lead to many health problems such as tension headaches, shoulder and back pain, and even pinched nerves.

Lower back pain problems are being replaced by upper back and shoulder issues caused by the poor posture exhibited by chronic texters. That same posture, if left untreated, can progress to hyperkyphosis, a curvature of the spine that can cause a person’s back to become permanently hunched.

What to do if you already have back pain
There are plenty of stretches and exercises you can do to get relief from back pain although some patients may not be able to. Yoga provides a few exercises such as the two-knee twist, the sphinx, the pigeon, and legs up the wall. These are other stretches you can do such as the knee to chest stretch and the cobra stretch. If you are able to incorporate some of these stretches/poses, it may diminish or eliminate your back pain. Be careful not to harm your back further by doing too much. If you simply are in too much pain or do not want to risk further injury, there are other options available.

There are supplements that can help if the back pain has already started. More than 30 million Americans use over-the-counter non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), like Aleve and Advil, to help alleviate back pain. NSAIDs do have side effects that limit who can take them and how often they can take them. Sometimes, NSAIDs are simply not enough to take away the excruciating pain.

Luckily there are herbal supplements that can be taken by themselves or added to other medications to help. Glucosamine, chondroitin, and methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) are naturally occurring compounds that have been used by millions for joint and cartilage damage. These supplements are also helpful in back pain as they help with joint flexibility, cartilage renewal, and muscle/tendon support, respectively.

Collagen helps provide the building blocks for and prevents degradation of cartilage
White willow bark has anti-inflammatory properties and relieves pain
Curcumin prevents degradation of and restores cartilage
Bromelain decreases pain and swelling and stimulates the rapid growth of tendon cells
Vitamin D regulates inflammatory signals
Boswellia has anti-inflammatory properties and increases range of motion
Devil’s claw has anti-inflammatory properties and relieves joint pain

If you took these supplements, or even just a few of them, you would experience relief from your back pain in a matter of days or weeks, even if prescription medication may not have helped. While there are some combination products out there, especially glucosamine, chondroitin, and MSM, most of the other ingredients only come by themselves. It may be hard to remember to take 8-10 different vitamins a day, let alone pay for them all. You can pick and choose different supplements to try if you cannot afford them all or you can try and use a combination supplement.
